Eczema in Babies
Adults or kids, eczema is affecting both. In babies it springs up easily because their immune system is not as developed as the adults. According to a study, 10% to 20% of all the babies in United States are affected by eczema. In most of the cases the condition is not permanent and when the babies reach the age of 2 years the effects of the problem fade away. But, in some of the cases the effects of the disease are chronic and the child continues to have the problem till he or she reaches adulthood.
The eczema most common in the babies is the atopic eczema. In this type of eczema the redness is prominent and also itching. It is mostly seen on the face, legs, arms or on the skin present on the scalp. In certain cases the effects may also be seen in other parts of the body as well. This type of eczema may be inherited. But it does not mean that the baby is born with it. If anyone of the parents had eczema then there are more chances that the baby might get it. In such cases eczema needs a slight event to spring up. If a child has poorly moisturized skin then there are all the chances that certain types of clothing or food can trigger eczema. The extremities of temperature can also be a factor for triggering eczema. Out of all the eczema cases in babies, about 30% are from food allergies. If you think or have heard from someone that some particular type of food is the cause of eczema cases in babies then you should discontinue its use at once. Normally people say that food like fish, milk, eggs and peanuts are the main culprits in triggering eczema in babies. Clothes also have their part to play in many cases. Clothes which have been treated in some fabric softeners may also be a cause. Also detergents leave chemicals in clothes which may trigger eczema in babies.
The treatment of baby eczema can be done by giving them a bath in lukewarm water. You should take proper care of the baby’s skin by using hypoallergenic creams. Also ensure proper lubrication of the effected skin with some ointment, recommended by a doctor. Try your best that you wrap your baby in dress made of cotton and do not use any fragrances or perfumes on it. You should also use mittens to cover the hands of your baby so that the baby does not touch the effected area. Cut the nails of your baby regularly to stop the baby from scratching or rubbing the skin. If the case is more severe then you should get some antihistamines recommended from a doctor. This would help to ease the itching problem. You can also use some local steroid creams but these should be used for limited time. These creams would help a lot to heal the skin. To treat and heal the skin, you can also make use of antibiotic creams or antibiotics can also be injected in the body to give relief. |
